"AGAWAM, Mass. (AP) -- A 55-year-old man died on Saturday when he fell out of a roller coaster at the Six Flags New England amusement park

The man, whose name was not immediately made public, fell out of the Superman Ride of Steel roller coaster at about 3 p.m. as it was approaching the end of its run, according to a statement from park officials.

Park paramedics responded immediately and the man was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he was pronounced dead at about 3:45 p.m., the statement said.

The man came out of the ride as it hit a curve, according to an eyewitness. The man "started spinning like a Frisbee and hit the rail, bam, and then fell down on the ground," Anthony Arroyo told WFSB-TV of Hartford, Conn.

People started screaming, eyewitness Sara Syez told WHDH-TV in Boston.

"All of a sudden people started screaming, 'Stop the ride, stop the ride,' someone has fallen off," she said. "They finally stopped the ride and it was extreme panic and we looked and all the people in the cars were crying ... and we looked over to the side and there was a gentleman laying by the fence."

The ride was immediately closed down and the incident is under investigation by park staff and Agawam police. The state Department of Public Safety, which oversees amusement park rides, was also notified.

The roller coaster was inspected on Saturday morning and was certified for operation by the state prior to the park's season opening on April 17, park officials said.

Agawam police secured the ride pending the arrival of a state inspector, Lt. Richard Light said. He said he did not expect the release of the victim's name on Saturday.

The incident was not the first time there has been a problem with the Superman roller coaster. In August 2001, 22 people suffered minor injuries when one car rear-ended another at the park just outside of Springfield, about 90 miles west of Boston.

The Superman Ride of Steel roller coaster opened in 2000 to much acclaim, and has been praised as the top roller coaster in the world by Park World Magazine. The mile-long ride is one of the tallest and fastest coasters in the world, according to the park's Web site.

It is 20 stories high at its highest, riders reach speeds of up to 80 mph and experience 10 seconds of weightlessness, according to the Web site.

The Agawam park is owned by Oklahoma City, Okla.-based Six Flags Inc., which operates 31 parks in North America and Europe"

CitationMan killed in fall from Intamin's "Superman Ride of Steel" roller coaster at Six Flags New England
(Saturday, May 1, 2004) - A 55-year-old man suffered fatal injuries when he fell from the "Superman Ride of Steel" roller coaster at Six Flags New England theme park in Agawam, Massachusetts. According to witnesses, the accident happened as the roller coaster train in which the victim was riding made its way through the final curve of the ride which leads to the brakes. The man was sitting in one of the two rear seats of the last car of the train. His body struck a fence before it came to rest on the ground.
The ride, which passed a state inspection last month and a park inspection on Saturday morning, was immediately shut down. Agawam Police, the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety and Six Flags are investigating.

"Superman Ride of Steel" was manufactured by Intamin AG of Switzerland. It is the top-rated roller coaster in the world.

In August 2001, twenty-two people were injured on the same ride when the two roller coaster trains collided. A faulty air supply line in the ride's braking system was blamed for that accident.

Sunday's accident marks the fifth time since 1999 that a rider has fallen from an Intamin-made ride.

In May, 1999, a rider was ejected from Intamin's "Superman" roller coaster at Six Flags Darien Lake theme park in New York. The victim, a 37-year-old man, was thrown from the ride near its end. He suffered only minor injuries. Investigators determined that the passenger restraint system was working properly, and that the weight of the rider, which was in excess of 300 pounds, could have been a factor.

In August, 1999, a 12-year-old boy was killed when he fell from Intamin's Drop Zone Stunt Tower freefall ride at Paramount's Great America theme park in Santa Clara, California. An investigation into his death yielded no explanation as to why he fell from the ride.

In September, 2001, a 40-year-old woman died after falling out of Intamin's "Perilous Plunge" chute ride at Knott's Berry Farm in California, billed as the tallest and steepest water ride in the world. The woman fell more than 100 feet to her death, even though park officials say that her seat belt and lap bar "were in their correct and locked position" when her boat returned to the dock. Intamin says that the victim was too large for the ride's safety restraints and that the park's ride attendants should not have allowed her to ride. California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health investigated the accident and concluded that the ride's safety restraint system was flawed, and called upon the park to make modifications so that riders of all body sizes would be adequately secured.

And two weeks ago, a 16-year-old girl died after falling out of "Hydro," another of Intamin's river plunge rides operating at Oakwood theme park in Pembrokeshire, Wales. That accident is still under investigation and the ride remains closed.

AGAWAM, Massachusetts (CNN) -- About 21 people were injured Monday at the Six Flags New England amusement park when a roller coaster train failed to stop at a loading platform and slammed into a train in front of it, authorities said.

Two or three people were knocked unconscious during the accident, said Lt. James Brown with the Agawam Fire Department

Elizbieta Trzepacz, a spokeswoman for Bay State Medical Center, said 10 people -- seven adults and three children -- were brought to their facility with minor injuries. Brown said the others injured were taken to three near by hospitals.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. on the Superman Ride of Steel -- a premier roller coaster that reaches speeds of 80 mph and climbs 20 stories on its biggest hill. The ride opened in 2000.

Agawam Fire Chief David Pisano said the cause of the crash is under investigation. He estimated the train that failed to stop at the loading platform was going about 20 mph when it hit the other train.

"There's some bent steel on both of the cars," he said.

He said the injuries range from broken noses and broken jaws to possible whiplash.

One person, he said, was taken to Bay State Medical Center in nearby Springfield with "Priority 1," or potentially critical, injuries.

A similar accident, but at a lower speed, occurred more than a week ago on the Yankee Cannonball roller coaster at Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire. Five people suffered minor injuries.
