CitationRoller Coaster Traps Riders

July 3, 2006 11:35 PM

(Angola - WANE) Angola firefighter T.R. Hagerty didn't know what to expect when he was called out the Fun Spot Amusement Park on Saturday. Police said 12 riders were trapped on the Afterburner roller coaster. When Hagerty and the rest of the department arrived, they found the riders dangling upside down, 50 feet above the ground.

"They were screaming, 'Get me out of here,' there were some swear words, and kids were crying," said Hagerty. He and another firefighter climbed into a bucket and were hoisted up to the top of the roller coaster.

At first, Hagerty and his partner thought they could release the harnesses, and one by one remove the riders. But that would have spelled disaster, since the harnesses are built to release all at once. The two firefighters realized they had to get the cars to the bottom of the loop.

"We tried to use a sledgehammer, that didn't budge it," said Hagerty, "We tried to use a pipe pole, that didn't work." Finally the firefighters used their own bucket, to knock the cars to safety. It worked, and the riders' roughly 40 minute ordeal came to an end.

The riders were treated for minor heat-related injuries, and shoulder and neck pain.

The Fun Spot Amusement Park was closed Sunday and Monday, because of bad weather. Newschannel 15's calls to park officials have not been returned.
